چکیده

Patterns on the air–water interface of a swirling cylinder flow are produced via hydrodynamic symmetry-breaking instability of the bulk flow. The patterns are rotating waves breaking the axisymmetry of the system and are longitudinal at the free surface ~i.e., not surface deforming!. Qualitative observations and quantitative measurements of velocity and vorticity are provided. Three-dimensional Navier–Stokes computations identify the symmetry-breaking mode responsible for the waves. These waves are then used to pattern Langmuir monolayers at concentrations sufficiently below saturation. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1572163#

Turbulent Events and Gas-Side Mass Transfer Coefficients in a Wavy Air-Water Stratified Flow

Turbulence structure on the gas side of a wavy stratified flow was experimentally investigated in a near horizontal 18.7 cm (H) 10 cm (W) 5.5m (L) rectangular duct.By applying the Variable Interval Time Averaging (VITA) technique to the hot wire anemometer measurements frequency of occurrence of turbulent events were detected near the air-water interface. Experimental results showed that fr...

Numerical investigation of upward air-water annular, slug and bubbly flow regimes

In this paper, numerical investigation of upward two phase flow of air-water has been studied. Different conditions of flow regimes including annular, wispy annular, slug, churn and bubbly are simulated based on Hewitt and Roberts map, and a good agreement between the experimental data of the map and the numerical simulation has been observed. Accordingly, a proper CFD model in CFD software of ...

Flow-induced patterning of Langmuir monolayers.

Insoluble monolayers on water have been patterned at the macroscopic scale (i.e., at the centimeter scale of the flow apparatus) as well as the mesoscopic scale (i.e., down to the micron scale resolvable via optical microscopy). The macroscopic patterning at the air/water interface results from a hydrodynamic instability leading to a steadily precessing flow pattern. The velocity field is measu...

Physical Modelling of Self-Aeration in a Cavitating Sudden PIPE Expansion Flow

Sudden pipe expansions have been known as efficient hydraulic energy dissipaters for a long time. The complex phenomenon of flow separation and velocity discontinuity at the interface of incoming jet and the recirculation flow, results in intensive shear and tensile rupture of the fluid and the associated destructive phenomenon of cavitation. This paper focuses on aeration in sudden pipe expans...

Multiphase flow and tromp curve simulation of dense medium cyclones using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Dense Medium Cyclone is a high capacity device that is widely used in coal preparation. It is simple in design but the swirling turbulent flow, the presence of medium and coal with different density and size fraction and the presence of the air-core make the flow pattern in DMCs complex. In this article the flow pattern simulation of DMC is performed with computational fluid dynamics and Fluent...
